About Us

Who are we?

In an April 1994 letter, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Atomic Energy (ASD/AE) assigned the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC) the responsibility to develop and operate the United States National Data Center (US NDC). These responsibilities were reaffirmed in a 22 May 1996 letter signed by the Air Force Chief of Staff.

The US NDC provides the US the capability to receive, process, archive, and report events of interest in monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The US NDC became officially operational on 17 December 1999. The US NDC has the ability to acquire, process, and archive continuous seismic and hydroacoustic data collected by sensors that are part of the US Atomic Energy Detection System (USAEDS) or US International Monitoring System (IMS) networks as well as acquire, archive, and store all continuous IMS station data. The US NDC serves as the data distribution point for all US government users and other authorized US users of IMS data, as designated by US National Authorities.

The US NDC demonstrates the US commitment to monitoring a Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty through international cooperation and state-of-the-art technology. It serves as a gateway between the US and the International Data Center for the exchange of geophysical data, primarily seismic data, which are recorded by a global network of stations. Established at AFTAC the US NDC’s primary function is to support the US monitoring and verification capabilities. The US NDC also provides academic communities and other authorized scientific organizations with readily accessible high quality data with which to conduct basic and applied research.

The infrasound and radionuclide techniques are part of the US NDC for monitoring and reporting purposes. These arrays provide data to, and receive data from, the US NDC.
